A Sheepdog Called Sky Page 6
The back door opened and Jasmine heard Dad taking his boots off in the scullery.
“We phoned the RSPCA, and an inspector is going to his house,” said Mum. “He’ll be prosecuted, and probably banned from keeping an animal again.”
“He’d better be,” said Jasmine. “He should be put in prison for life.”
“He should be starved and thrown in a hedge to die,” said Manu, hopping into the room on Jasmine’s crutches. “I’m starving, Mum. What can I have to eat?”
“There might be some biscuits left,” said Mum. “But don’t eat too many. Dad’s going to make dinner in a minute.”
Manu hopped out of the room.
“Careful,” said Dad, coming into the hall. “We don’t want any more sprained ankles today.”
“But what’s going to happen to Sky?” asked Jasmine.
Mum and Dad looked at each other.
“We’ve been thinking about this,” said Dad. “I could really do with a sheepdog if I’m going to increase the flock. And Sky certainly seems to have the makings of a good working dog. So we wondered if you’d be prepared, Jasmine, to work with me to train Sky as a sheepdog.”
Jasmine stared from her mum to her dad, hardly able to take this in.
“You mean … I can really keep him?”
“You’ve done very well with his training so far,” said Dad, “and he’s clearly keen and quick. So if you’re happy to share him with me, then yes, we think it would be a good idea to keep him.”
“Oh, thank you!” cried Jasmine, flinging her arms around Sky’s neck. “Sky, did you hear that?”
“Yay!” cried Manu, running into the room. They all looked at him curiously.
“I didn’t realise you were so keen to keep Sky,” said Mum.
“Of course I am,” said Manu, “but it’s not that.” He brandished a half-eaten cupcake in the air. “Look! There was one left in the tin, and it had the lucky tooth inside it!”
“Excellent,” said Dad. “And I’m sure we’re all very happy that you were the one who found it.”
Jasmine turned back to Sky. “First I rescued you,” she said, “and then you rescued me. And now you’re going to stay here forever. And, even better than that, Sky, you’re going to do what collies love to do more than anything else in the world. You’re going to be a sheepdog.”
